Did Moses really write the Torah or JEDP?

Did Moses really wrote the Torah or JEDP? There is a deadly hypothesis denying that Moses wrote the Torah. It is widely taught in Christian Theological colleges today. It is the so-called Documentary (JEDP) hypotheses. This teaches that various anonymous authors compiled five books (plus other portions of the Old Testament). They claim that these authors compiled the Old Testament some 900 years later after Moses from centuries of oral tradition.

The people formulating these ideas were evolutionists. This was prevalent in philosophical circles at the time. They were implicitly atheistic in their thinking. And they wanted to rid the world of any thought of a Living GOD who created all things.

One of prominence was Julius Wellhausen (1844–1918), who restated the Documentary Hypothesis in terms of the evolutionary framework. He taught that Israel’s religion was simply the invention of man.

Importantly one must note evolution is a racist-based doctrine. Therefore, the JEDP hypothesis would have an element of racism included. They assumed that “the art of writing was virtually unknown during the time of Moses. Therefore, he could have left any written records. This claim is an attack on the intelligence of the ancient Israelites. Since the time the documentary hypothesis was first proposed, archaeologists have discovered scores of written records pre-dating the time of Moses. Why would Israel's ancient neighbors know how to write but Israel couldn’t?

But sadly today, most Israelites are the biggest proponents of the theory of evolution. Evolution argues away the existence of GOD. If GOD does not exist, then man doesn’t have to obey HIS Word. They prefer to have the freedom to do as much as they please because GOD’s yoke is too heavy for them.

The Case of Deuteronomy 34:5 -6

There are “Smart Alex” and scoffers in academia who like to say that Moses didn’t write the Bible because of the wordings of two particular verses.

Deu 34:5 And Moses came to an end there, the servant of the LORD, in the land of Moab by the word of the LORD.
Deu 34:6 And they entombed him in the land of Moab near the house of Peor. And not has any one known his burial place until this day.

But the Bible never attributes these verses to Moses. How could Moses make that statement if he was already dead? Even an idiot could see this is an addendum made by someone else, most likely Joshua.

The New Testament shows that Moses wrote the Torah and had nothing to do with the JEDP theory

The best argument against the “JEDP theory” is the Bible itself. There are scores of dozens of citations, but I will have to limit this study to just a few.

JESUS ascribe the Torah to Moses:

Mar 12:26 But concerning the dead, that they arise; did you not read in the book of Moses about the bush, as God spoke to him, saying, I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?

JESUS is plainly saying that Moses wrote the account of the burning bush in Exodus 3:1-3.

The Apostle Peter credits Moses for Deuteronomy 18:15

in Acts 3:22, he comments on a passage in Deuteronomy 18:15 and credits Moses as being the author of that passage.

Act 3:22 For Moses indeed said to the fathers that, the Lord your God shall raise up a prophet unto you from your brethren, as me; him you shall hear according to all as much as he should speak to you.

The Apostle Paul attests that Moses wrote the law.

Rom 10:5 For Moses writes about the righteousness, the one of the law, that, The man observing them shall live by them.

Paul, in Romans 10:5, talks about the righteousness Moses describes in Leviticus 18:5. Paul, therefore, testifies that Moses is the author of Leviticus.

Therefore, for the JEDP theory to be true, then Jesus, Peter, and Paul are liars. At best their understanding of the Old Testament is erroneous.

The Torah shows that Moses was the author

Some sections of the Torah do explicitly say they were written by Moses. For example Exodus 17:14; 24:4–7; 34:27; Numbers 33:2; Deuteronomy 31:9, 24.2 Kings 14:6; 2 Chronicles 25:4; Ezra 6:18;Neh 13:1; You can go back and read them but I will limit this study to the following ones.

Deu 31:22 And Moses wrote this ode in that day, and he taught it to the sons of Israel.

Therefore, Moses would have written this song and taught it to the children of Israel the same day.

Many other times, in the rest of the Old Testament, Moses is said to have been the writer, e.g. Joshua 1:7–8;

Jos 1:7 Be strong then and manly! to guard and to do in so far as I gave charge Moses my servant. And do not turn aside from them to the right or to the left! that you should perceive in all what ever you should act on
Jdg 3:4 And it happened so as to test Israel by them, to know if they will hearken to the commandments of the LORD which he gave charge to their fathers by the hand of Moses.
1Ki 2:3 And you shall guard the watch of the LORD your God, to go in his ways, to guard his commandments, and the ordinances, and the judgments, and his testimonies, as written in the law of Moses; that you should perceive all what you shall do, and everywhere of which ever you should have paid attention there.

Moses wrote it, But GOD is the ultimate author of the Torah and the Bible

Not only am I asserting that Moses wrote the Torah, but it is a fact that it came from the mouth of GOD. Just as the New Testament came from HIS inspiration. The various authors wrote them, but it was GOD breathed.

Neh 8:1 And the seventh month arrived, and the sons of Israel were in their cities. And all the people gathered together as one man into the wide place in front of the water gate. And they told Ezra the scribe to bring the scroll of the law of Moses, which the LORD gave charge to Israel.
Dan 9:11 And all Israel violated your law, and turned aside to not hearken to your voice; and there came upon us the curse, and the oath, the one having been written in the law of Moses the servant of God, for we sinned against him.
Dan 9:12 And he established his words which he spoke against us, and against our judges, the ones judging us, to bring upon us great evils; such as have not taken place underneath all of the heaven, according to the things taking place in Jerusalem.
Dan 9:13 As was written in the law of Moses, all these evils came upon us. And we did not beseech the face of the LORD our God, to turn from our iniquities, and to perceive in all truth.

GOD spoke to Moses, mouth to mouth

We are told that GOD spoke to Moses. Then he transcribes the words from GOD’s mouth.

Num 12:6 And he said to them, Hear my words. If there should be a prophet among you to the LORD, I will be made known to him in a vision, and in sleep I will speak to him.
Num 12:7 Not so my attendant Moses; in my entire house he is trustworthy.
Num 12:8 Mouth to mouth I will speak to him in sight, and not through enigmas; even he saw the glory of the LORD. And why were you not afraid to speak ill against my attendant Moses?

This also answers the stupid question. They argue that Moses couldn’t know of the incidents in Genesis. Therefore he couldn’t have written it. They fail to understand that GOD was there. Therefore HE was able to tell Moses about it.

All are consistent with the principles of Scripture documentation as enunciated in (2 Timothy 3:15–17 and 2 Peter 1:20–21).

2Ti 3:16  Every scripture is God inspired, and beneficial for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for instruction-- the one in righteousness;
2Ti 3:17 that the man of God should be complete for accomplishing every good work.
2Pe 1:20 This first knowing, that every prophecy of scripture does not take place by private explanation.
2Pe 1:21 For not by will of man was prophecy borne at some time or other, but by holy spirit being borne the holy men of God spoke.

Therefore let us put our trust in the Word of GOD and not in the ridiculous and baseless JEDP theory.
